Types of Fragments
Enclaves
Territories completely surrounded by a single foreign country. An enclave is also always an exclave of its governing state.
e.g. Lesotho (surrounded by South Africa)
Exclaves
Parts of a country geographically separated from the main territory by foreign land, with no land connection to the main body.
e.g. Kaliningrad Oblast (Russia, surrounded by Lithuania, Belarus, Poland)
Overseas Territories
Non-contiguous territories administered by a state, often with a distinct constitutional status from the metropolitan territory.
e.g. Gibraltar (administered by the United Kingdom)
Crown Dependencies
Self-governing possessions of the British Crown that are not part of the United Kingdom, with the Crown responsible for defence and international relations.
e.g. Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man
Special Administrative Regions
Subdivisions with high degrees of autonomy under a "one country, two systems" or similar framework.
e.g. Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR (China)
Disputed Territories
Areas whose sovereignty or administration is contested by two or more states or entities.
e.g. Western Sahara, Kashmir
